The importance of culturally matched foster care and why we need foster carers from all backgrounds

At Nexus Fostering, we believe every child deserves to feel proud of who they are and connected to their roots. For children from Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic (BAME) backgrounds, cultural identity plays a crucial role in their development, well-being, and sense of belonging. Ideally, children in care should be placed with foster carers who share their cultural background. This provides them with an environment where their traditions, values, and beliefs are understood and reflected, helping them maintain a strong connection to their heritage.

However, across the UK, there is a shortage of foster carers from BAME communities. This creates a pressing need for foster carers from all backgrounds who are open to learning about, supporting, and celebrating a child’s cultural identity, even if they don’t share it themselves.

Why cultural matching matters

Children in care often experience feelings of displacement, and for those from minority ethnic backgrounds, being placed with a foster carer who understands their culture can offer a sense of familiarity and comfort. Cultural matching can help children feel seen and valued, allowing them to develop pride in their identity.

Foster carers from similar backgrounds can provide more than just a safe home—they offer cultural understanding, shared experiences, and the ability to relate to the child’s challenges in navigating their identity in the wider world. You can read our foster carer Mary's story here.

The role of foster carers from different backgrounds

While cultural matching is ideal, it’s not always possible. This is where foster carers from different backgrounds play a critical role. Even if you don’t share the same culture as the child in your care, your willingness to learn about their heritage and support their cultural identity can make all the difference.

At Nexus Fostering, we provide training, resources, and guidance to help foster carers from different backgrounds develop the cultural sensitivity needed to support children from BAME communities. By actively engaging with the child’s culture—whether it’s learning about their traditions, celebrating important cultural events, or connecting with local communities—you can create an environment where they feel proud of who they are.

Why we need foster carers from all backgrounds

We need foster carers from all walks of life—whether you share a child’s background or not. What matters most is your commitment to providing a loving, supportive home and helping children maintain a strong connection to their identity. Foster carers who embrace the opportunity to learn about and respect a child’s culture can create a safe space where that child feels valued and supported.

By fostering a child from a different background, you can also show them the beauty of cultural diversity, teaching them that understanding and acceptance go both ways.

How you can help

Becoming a foster carer with Nexus Fostering is a rewarding experience that allows you to make a lasting impact on a child’s life. Whether you come from the same cultural background or not, your willingness to support a child’s heritage can help them grow into a confident, well-adjusted adult.

If you’re interested in learning more about fostering and how you can support children from BAME communities, join us for our virtual event on Wednesday 23rd October 7pm - 8pm. You can find out more about the event and register here.

Together, we can ensure that every child in care feels proud of who they are and confident in their future.
