The struggles of mental health - Kieran

Kieran has just been taken into care. His mum left Kieran and his dad in the family home and has moved away from the area wishing to start a new life. Kieran and his dad struggle to get by because although dad tries hard he has mental health problems and neglects his son’s needs. As a result, Kieran suffers from neglect and has not been taught basic hygiene and is known at school as the dirty kid. Kieran is 10.
As a result of this situation, Kieran is bullied at school which has led to him having a low attendance rate, being behind with his homework and playing truant. Kieran does not have a toothbrush and toilet roll is often not available in the household. Because of this, he resists showering and keeping himself clean and tidy. Kieran is anxious because he is worried about his dad living on his own.
Kieran needs Foster Carers who will build up a consistent routine for him starting at the beginning of the day making sure he is on top of his personal hygiene and is equipped with clean, well-fitting school uniform.
Foster Carers would need to liaise closely with educational professionals to get his education and attainment levels back on track. Kieran’s anxieties about his dad could be alleviated by assuring him that his dad is safe and well and promoting positive contact visits with his dad. Kieran would benefit from the following:
