Reflecting on Ramadan - young persons advice and experiences of Ramadan

Foster child's advice on Ramadan

Ramadan brings people together and creates an atmosphere of unity and support. 19-year-old Rashid, originally from Sudan, has lived with his foster carers since the age of 16. Rashid shares a few personal thoughts on the experience of fasting, its significance, and how others can support him during this special time.

The Experience of Fasting

Fasting during Ramadan can be challenging but much easier when the climate is cooler. In this country, the colder weather makes it easier to get through the long days without feeling too thirsty or uncomfortable. Plus, with the days being shorter, the fast doesn't feel as long as it might in warmer months.

Why Ramadan is Important

Ramadan is meaningful because it's a time when everyone comes together. There's a strong sense of community, whether it's through fasting, prayers, or simply sharing meals. This shared experience helps strengthen the bond between family, friends, and the wider community.

How I Celebrate Eid

Eid is a joyful occasion that I celebrate with friends and family. We usually enjoy a traditional meal from Sudan, which makes the day feel even more special. The food, the conversations, and the laughter are all part of what makes Eid memorable.

How Others Can Support During Ramadan

For people from different cultural backgrounds, the most helpful thing they can do is be respectful and knowledgeable about Ramadan. Understanding the significance of fasting and being mindful of those observing it creates a more supportive environment for everyone.

Support from My Foster Carer

During Ramadan, my foster carer plays a big role in ensuring that we have everything we need. They make sure our favourite foods are stocked up, and even prepare meals in advance so we can break our fast right away. This thoughtful support makes the experience even better and reminds us how important it is to have a caring and understanding fostering household during this time.
