Guide to transferring fostering agencies

As a current foster carer, you may be thinking about transferring to a new fostering agency, whether from your local authority or another agency. We recognise that there are various reasons why foster carers decide to switch agencies, and regardless of whether you currently have a foster child in your care, transferring is possible and sometimes, a change can be a great step forward!

At Nexus Fostering, we make the transition easier than you might think. We pride ourselves on being rated Outstanding by Ofsted, that puts foster carers, children, and young people at the centre of everything we do.

There are many reasons why foster carers may consider transferring agencies. As carers settle into their role, they may find that the agency they initially chose no longer meets their needs in the way they expected. Over time, as their understanding of fostering deepens, they may realise what they truly require from an agency. If support is lacking, communication is poor, or their needs are not being met, foster carers can feel disappointed or even frustrated.

If you feel that your current fostering agency isn't a good fit, it’s completely acceptable to explore other options. At Nexus Fostering, we understand that the satisfaction of our carers directly impacts the care they can provide. If you're not happy with your current agency, it may be time to consider making a move.

How to transfer fostering agencies

If you’re considering transferring, the first step is to contact the fostering agency you’re interested in. This will allow you to learn more about them and determine if they are the right fit for you. You can speak to an advisor over the phone and arrange for a local social worker to come out to visit you.

The transfer process is similar to the initial fostering assessment you underwent when you first became a foster carer. We’ll need to complete the necessary checks and references to ensure the safety and well-being of children in your care. However, this process is typically quicker than the original assessment, as we already understand your experience and skills.

The main difference in the transfer process is whether you have a foster child in your care. If you do, the process may take a bit longer but should not prevent the transfer, as long as it doesn’t negatively impact the child.

Transferring with a foster child in your care

The well-being and safety of any foster children in your care will always be our priority during the transfer process. If you wish to transfer to Nexus Fostering, you must provide written notice to your current agency and the local authority responsible for the child. A transfer meeting will then be scheduled, where you, your current agency, Nexus Fostering, the child’s social worker, and any other relevant parties will discuss the child’s needs and ensure the transfer will not disrupt their care.

Once all parties agree, we will begin your fostering assessment. This will be reviewed by an independent panel, who will make a recommendation regarding your approval to foster with us. If approved by our Agency Decision Maker (ADM), we’ll ask you to submit your resignation from your current agency. After the 28-day notice period, you’ll officially join the Nexus Fostering family.

Transferring without a foster child in your care

If you’re not currently fostering a child, the transfer process is simpler. You’ll still need to inform your current agency of your intention to transfer, but there will be no need for a meeting. We will proceed with the necessary checks, submit your paperwork to an independent panel, and seek approval from our ADM.
